Page 2 of 2 Pontypridd 32 - 17 Maesteg PONTYPRIDD ended their losing streak with a much-needed home victory, writes Mark Burton (Western Mail). A hat-trick of tries by centre Dafydd Lockyer and 12 points from the boot of fly-half Dai Flannagan was enough to seal victory. But while Lockyer and Flanagan will gain the plaudits for their points, the triumph was based on a determined forwards' effort in which Cook Islands flanker Tu Tamara was outstanding.
It was a welcome win for Simon King's men following three successive defeats at the hands of the three top sides, Newport, Ebbw Vale and Llanelli, and the three points move Pontypridd equal on points with Maesteg in mid-table. Maesteg outside-half Luke Richards also recorded a 12-point haul, but it was not enough to deny Pontypridd their fifth win. The visitors took the initiative early on when impressive Maesteg centre Mike Davies scored the game's first try after only five minutes when he slid through the mud after gathering Richards' clever chip kick. Good interplay between Flanagan and Lockyer set up a try for centre Gavin Dacey, converted by the Pontypridd outside-half. And Lockyer turned from provider to scorer when he crossed just before half-time before Richards and Flanagan swapped penalties to give the home side a 15-10 interval lead. Lockyer grabbed two more tries, while Flanagan added seven points with the boot. Richards responded with a late converted try, but it turned out to be a token effort. TRY scorers for Pontypridd: Gavin Dacey and Dafydd Lockyear (3). Dai Flanagan kicked 2 Penalties and 3 Conversions. TRY scorers for Maesteg: Davies and Richards.
