Page 1 of 2 Ponty.net announce that as pre-season training commences on 4th July, Pontypridd RFC will set about putting together a squad to compete in the Principality Premiership, and to defend its possession of the Konica Minolta Welsh Cup. That squad will be built on a solid core of retention from last season's successful pool of players.
Players released from last season's squad are centre Andy Parkinson, outside half Richard Langmead, and prop Gerald Cox. Having left to take up fully professional contracts elsewhere are full back Morgan Stoddart (Llanelli Scarlets), winger Matthew Nuthall (Pertemps Bees), hooker Ben Phillips (Doncaster) and lock Chris Martenko (Ospreys), whilst scrum half Wayne Evans and hooker Duane Goodfield have been promoted to the Blues' senior regional squad. Flanker Wayne O'Connor will take a year out to travel, and play club rugby in Australia. Ponty's quota of Blues Academy and development players will be announced soon, with a number of other new signings to bolster the squad also in the offing. A number of young players from junior clubs throughout the Valleys have been invited to train with Pontypridd as potential candidates for next season's squad, again emphasising the club's total commitment to the concept of development. The coaching team at Sardis Road next season will remain unchanged, with Simon King retained as senior and forwards coach, assisted by backs coach Paul John, with Wayne Cullen continuing as team manager. Joining them will be new conditioning coach Mark Powell.
