Tonyrefail-born ex-Wales Under-21 second row Martenko, 23, has signed a development contract at the Ospreys. Highly rated full-back Morgan Stoddart, 21, offers valuable cover at Stradey as he can also play centre and fly-half. Hooker Ben Phillips, 24, has also left Konica Minolta Cup winners Ponty for Doncaster RFC, but the club say they will be recruiting in the summer.
"As will always be the case when players leave the club in such circumstances, these boys go with our absolute goodwill," Pontypridd coach Simon King stated "We hope they go on to make a mark in the professional game, and whatever success they achieve, we will always be proud that they came to the fore with Pontypridd. The ethos of this club remains the same as ever, that we take pride in the talent that we produce and nurture. Every player that passes through the system, whether they represent Ponty for one season or 10, will carry the club name with pride."
In the meantime, Wales and Newport Gwent Dragons centre Ceri Sweeney will undergo an operation this week to try to cure the groin problem that wrecked his season.
The injury ruled the 26-year-old, 27- cap man out of the Six Nations.
He returned for the Dragons' failed attempt to make the Heineken Cup, but was given the summer off by Wales. "The doctors were confident that rest and rehab would cure the problem, but it hasn't healed so an operation should sort it once and for all," he said. "The doctors have predicted a couple of weeks rest before I can do some work. If that goes well I should be back in training during the pre-season."
The Dragons and Wales also hope that long-term absentees Kevin Morgan (foot) and Gareth Cooper (shoulder) will be fit by then.
