Page 1 of 3 This Sunday (May 13) will see the first in a series of fund-raising events for the Alun Mardon Memorial Fund with two matches featuring a host of international and local players taking part at Wattstown RFC. There are still vacancies for players who are interested in participating in the day’s matches.
The 26-year-old rugby player died after being taken ill at a match in Rhondda Cynon Taff last month. Alun Mardon died after the league game between Wattstown and Trefil. Wattstown RFC's secretary Philip Harris said that Mr Mardon, who had been playing as a flanker, had been taken ill at the side of the field. "He was later taken to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital where he sadly he passed away," he added. The first match will be between Wattstown Veterans and a combined Llnharran/Pencoed Veteran side. A match between Wattstown and guests versus Rhondda and guests will follow this. Any players wishing to participate should arrive at Wattstown RFC playing fields by 11.30am. All players are asked to dress appropriately, wearing their club ties. Entertainment will continue at the clubhouse afterwards, where everyone is welcome.
