Under 17’s Pontypridd 19 – 13 Pencoed The boys played very well beating a strong Pencoed side 19 - 13, their support play and commitment in the tackle area was excellent and it was an excellent team effort. Pontypridd Try Scorers: Lewis Hale, Daniel Deardon and Anthony John. Craig Davies kicked two Conversions. PLAYER APPEAL With several long term injuries Pontypridd under 17’s are in need of more players, so if anybody is interested they can contact Andrew Watkins on 07886709888, or manager Islwyn Johns on 07810480875. The Pontypridd under 17’s will next season progress to be the club's Youth squad and are appealing for players within the age group to join them. A spate of injuries, some of them long term, and a trend for other local clubs to entice individuals away with offers of rewards, have depleted the Pontypridd under 17s player base. The squad have been together, playing for Pontypridd throughout the mini and junior age groups, and are set for a higher profile within the club next year as the Youth set-up is restored. The under 17s squad have already this winter been involved in a training session with the Pontypridd senior squad - an experience which they relished, and hopefully can do so again before the season ends. Coach Andrew Watkins is very much aware of the need to offer his boys such encouragement as a means of keeping players within the squad. "We are fighting hard to keep our squad together this season" said Andrew, "in the face of some very tough competition from other clubs. We always push the angle that we represent Pontypridd RFC, and how the boys can take pride in being involved with a great club, but we need help from other sections of the club to achieve this. It will take a huge effort, but we are totally committed to seeing it through to the end of the season. Hopefully next year as the boys move up to Youth level, our profile will be greater, and we can build a strong and competitive squad".
