Pontypridd Youth (2) Win St Barts Flask in local derby... BH League Pontypridd Youth (2) 69 - 0 Porth Harlequins Since 1989 the St Barts Flask has been proudly displayed in the trophy cabinets of Porth Harlequins Rugby Club and now after 19 years of waiting it resides at Sardis Road after a comprehensive victory by Pontypridd Youth (2) over local rivals Porth Harlequins...
Played at Abercynon RFC as Sardis Road was unavailable due to the International Under 18 game. This was a superb example of Youth rugby where the conditions allowed open rugby to be played. Both teams were up for the match to win the St Bart’s Flask that was last played for in 1989 before some of the present players were born! Ponty started the game at pace and laid down the gauntlet to Porth who defended bravely against the wave and waves of the Ponty attacks. The ball was moved freely between forwards and backs and it was not long before the Porth defence was breached by Captain Richard Bayliss who went over for a Try that was converted by Dean Gunter. As the game progressed the fitness of the Ponty team began to show as the ball was moved from deep all over the field. The Porth defence was now stretched and the Tries began to come hard and fast. The score was Ponty 31 Porth Harlequins 0 at half time. The writing was on the wall as Ponty’s superior fitness and skill levels now began to show. The second half started at pace as benefits of the 6 week layoff due to the weather started to show. Ponty now confident in their abilities ran the ball off their own line and really stretched the Porth defences to the limit. The final score was Ponty 69 Porth 0 but Porth never gave up fighting a rear guard battle to the end. Prominent for Ponty was Dean Gunter with a tally of 24 points on the day. Man of the Match Lee “Cannonball” Griffiths who despite a torrid time in the front row kept his discipline throughout and was rewarded with a fine try in typical “Cannonball” style! Porth’s coach Andrew Davies would like to thank both Abercynon and Ponty for the hospitality on the day and his assurance that the return match will be eagerly awaited... Scorers Dean Gunter 2 tries 7 Conversions. Casey Pittman 3 Tries, Richard Bayliss 2 Tries, Craig James 1 try, Lee “Cannonball” Griffiths 1 Try, Lee Kelleher 1 Try, Arron Atkins 1 Try.
