The last fornight has seen the under 16's missing several key players due to district games, injuries and illness. Despite suffering their biggest defeat for some time at Tonmawr, they bounced back to defeat a very good Tylerstown team.
First up was an away fixture at Tonmawr, who have been reinforced by the transfer of a host of Osprey players in the close season. The Ponty squad weakened by a number of illnesses, and Dewar Shield call ups for their younger players, put in a brave performance, and despite a battling display from the Ponty pack, with James Sullivan and Marc Jones very impressive, the class, pace and skills of the Tonmawr backs saw them run in four quality tries without reply. The final score of 24-3 was Ponty's biggest defeat for some time, and was scant reward for a magnificent forward effort, that saw the Ponty pack powerfully maul over the Tonmawr try line on four occasions. However the referee was unhappy with the grounding by lock Nathaniel Williams for the first effort, and on the other three occasions ruled the ball had been held up and unusually awarded the resultant five metre scrum to the defending side. The Under 16's bounced back with an encouraging win away at Tylorstown last week, running in five tries to post a 34 - 0 victory. Once again the Ponty side were without key players who were involved with a Rhondda district match on Saturday, or were unavailable due to injury or illness. The Tylorstown team defended bravely throughout, against a much bigger pack of forwards, and should be commended for their commitment in defence, which denied Ponty on a number of occasions. Man of the match for Pontypridd was wing Rhys Simms, who although playing his first full game of the season after a serious injury, and filling in as an emergency fly half for the day due to injuries, finished the game with fourteen points from a try, penalty and three conversions. If there are any budding young under 16 age group props or half-backs who aren't registered for Junior rugby and would like to have a trial with Ponty, please feel free to come to training at Taff Vale Park, Broadway, Treforest, 7pm till 8.45 on Thursdays.
