Page 10 of 12 Pontypridd 7-10 Llantrisant
Sunday 18th September 2005 Saw a very aggressive game dominated by huge tackling from both sides saw a big Llantrisant side sneak a tough fought victory against the smaller but well drilled Pontypridd team.
A bright start by Llantrisant saw an early-unconverted try in the corner for Harry Davies. Despite losing their powerful flanker Steffan Jones to a painful injury Pontypridd responded well by keeping Llantrisant pinned in their own half for a long period before a fantastic set move from a scrum saw centre Dale Hughes go over unopposed, the try was converted by number 10 Joel Raikes. Following the Pontypridd try it was Llantrisant’s turn to keep Ponty pinned back until some strong aggressive defence by the Pontypridd forwards lead by the abbrasive Michael Connor and Jordan Jevons created a fantastic break by outside half Joel Raikes. This got Pontypridd up to the oppositions twenty-two where they remained camped until the half time whistle. Half time score 7-5 to Pontypridd. Pontypridd’s forwards dominated the early exchanges of the second half, but excellent defence by Llantrisant kept Pontypridd from scoring, with their forwards often stealing the ball at vital times for the outside-half to clear. Prominent for Pontypridd at this time was full back Oliver Bailey who constantly ran the ball back at the opposition, helping to keep them pinned in their own twenty-two. After the early onslaught from Pontypridd, Llantrisant eventually managed to get out of their own half and keep Pontypridd under pressure for a good ten minutes. This led to several Pontypridd injuries that saw all their subs used and inevitably led to a try in the corner for Elliot Jones despite resilient defence by the whole of the Pontypridd team. With the try unconverted the score was now 10-7 to Llantrisant and even though Pontypridd camped on the oppositions line for the final five minutes, that was how it ended. An excellent effort by both sides, in a game where neither team deserved to lose. Every player in both teams deserve praise for the intensity and pace of the game that would have left many senior professional clubs in awe...
