Page 2 of 2 Under 12's Pontypridd 54 - 5 Nelson Pontypridd have averaged an amazing 7 tries per game and a total of 214 points in the last five matches, with their overall annual average being 5 tries per game...
Before kick off it was agreed to play thirteen a-side due to a virus sweeping through the Nelson squad. On loan to Nelson in the first half were Nathan Payne (Oliver Dalley), Garin Rossiter, Alex Logan and Steffan Jenkins who lead the way for Nelson throughout the half. The match kicked off with our very own former coach Mark Griffiths back on refereeing duties due to an absence of a Nelson referee. From the start Pontypridd played with hwyl, passing the ball around the field, with players supporting each other and running the ball at the opposition at every opportunity. Early field position saw Pontypridd’s powerhouse of a captain, Joel Raikes barge through the defence to score a fantastic team try that he converted himself to get the ball rolling for Pontypridd. Pontypridd won the restart thanks to some excellent work by the powerful Michael Connor and impressive Ryan Jones who forced themselves up to the Nelson twenty-two. Quick ball from the resulting scrum saw the Pontypridd’s sharp scrum-half Chris Jones go blind and feed the galloping full-back Oliver Bailey who left defenders trailing as he changed angles and scored a great blind side try that was converted by Joel Raikes. From the restart the Pontypridd pack once more showed their improving form and shoved Nelson all over the field, a feat that they continued with throughout the match. The Pontypridd packs dominance up front continually won opposition ball and was often the catalyst for the backs to shine. It was from quick ball from the forwards that the Pontypridd backs showed some dynamic running by Joel Raikes along with slick passing by Dale Hughes and Mickey Jones to stretch the Nelson defence, this allowed Oliver Bailey to cut in, scoring his second try that was dutifully converted by Joel Raikes. Some great passing and movement, in particular Jordan Jevons and Liam Williams, once again saw Pontypridd camped in the Nelson twenty-two where the determined Dan Williams peeled off the side of a maul to score a deserved forwards try that was again converted by Joel Raikes. Pontypridd’s rush defence put Nelson under continuing pressure and it was from this pressure that Pontypridd scrum-half Chris Jones intercepted the opposition ball on their try line to dive over and score a fantastic opportunist try. Joel Raikes once again successfully kicked the conversion. Nelson managed to win the restart thanks to some excellent pressure from our very own Steffan Jenkins who relished the opportunity to represent his former club. Steffan fed another loaned player Alex Logan who provided quick ball for Nelson’s huge centre to gain valuable territory in the Pontypridd half for the first time in the match, who showed some brilliant individual skill and fantastic running angles. But as it looked like Nelson were about to come into the game, rush defence by Pontypridd saw their lighting quick centre Dale Hughes steal the ball in contact to race away to score unopposed under the posts from his own half. Once more the consistent Joel Raikes converted the try for a half time score of 42 – 0 to Pontypridd. To make for a more dynamic and equal game, Pontypridd loaned several key players to Nelson that allowed for parity in their team with Dale Hughes taking over their outside-half role, Liam Williams moved to centre, Jordan Jevons took over as hooker, whilst the huge Michael Connor represented their back row. The changes worked and the second half proved to be a much tighter affair with Pontypridd’s loaned players again leading the way for Nelson. From the restart Pontypridd’s pack, led by Will Thomas and Alex Knowles drove Nelson back to their try line and a fantastic rolling maul saw the enthusiastic Gareth Cleaver go over for a hard worked forwards try. Joel Raikes kicked his seventh conversion in a row to show that he is returning to his best kicking form that bodes well for future games. The additions to the Nelson team saw our very own Michael Connor steal Pontypridd ball to feed the dynamic Dale Hughes, with his elusive running taking him around his Pontypridd team-mates to score a fantastic solo try against the run of play. Not to be undone by such a fine try, Pontypridd full-back Oliver Bailey, supported by the ever present Garin Rossiter and the enthusiastic Morgan Rees, scored the try of the match. Some excellent passing by Pontypridd forwards Nathan Payne and Oliver Dalley fed the backs who quickly got the ball out to Oliver Bailey out wide. Olly then raced fifty metres tiptoeing along the touchline and barging off several defenders on the way to score a deserved hatrick. The final whistle blew early for a deserved victory by this ever improving Pontypridd team. Final score 54 – 5 to Pontypridd. This was a very professional display by this young team who’s slick passing again defied their young age and where each player deserves praise. The boys have now scored 28 tries in three games...
