Page 2 of 2 Under 12’s Pontypridd 65 – 7 Ynysybwl Twenty tries in two games for this growing Pontypridd side...
Under 12’s Pontypridd 65 – 7 Ynysybwl Pontypridd started brightly with some sharp passing by the impressive half-backs of Dale Hughes and Garin Rossiter setting up fullback Oliver Bailey to go on one of his thunderous runs down the wing. Despite the close attention of several Ynysybwl defenders Olly raced and barged his way to the line for a fine 40 yard solo try. From the restart Pontypridd set out their intentions and a fine rolling maul by the forwards, particularly the props Johnathan Griffin and Will Thomas saw the huge Michael Connor score a typical forwards try. Again from the restart the Pontypridd pack were again dominant and led by the aggressive Jordan Jevons they drove themselves to the opposition twenty two, where the awesome flanker Nathan Payne peeled off the side of a ruck to score an excellent try under the posts that was converted by outside-half Dale Hughes. The restart saw a repeat performance by the Pontypridd pack, with Dan Williams leading the way for hooker Jordan Jevons to dive over for a well deserved try from close range. Following the restart Ynysybwl managed to get hold of the ball for a few minutes and placed Pontypridd under some pressure, but quick ball from a scrum saw the sharp scrum-half Garin Rossiter catch the Ynysybwl team off-guard as he went blind and race forty yards to score a fantastic opportunist try, showing a great running angle to round the Ynysybwl defence. The final score of the half saw another blind side by Garin Rossiter to set up flying Outside-half Dale Hughes who supported by the sharp Mickey Jones rounded the Ynysybwl defence to race under the posts from his own half. Dale converted his own try for a half time lead of 34 – 0 to Pontypridd. Outstanding for Pontypridd during the first half were the ever present Steffan Jenkins, the aggressive Jordan Jevons, the barging Johnathan Griffin, the elusive Dale Hughes, along with the huge tackling wings Liam Williams and Mickey Jones. Also impressive was the outstanding Joshua Whiles-Pritchard who was a close runner for man of the match with his rush defence and attacking flair. Before kick-off it was agreed to play thirteen aside as Ynysybwl were short of a couple of players, this provided the opportunity for Pontypridd to field almost two completely separate teams in each half as this gave each player an equal run out, hence the second half saw wholesale changes for Pontypridd in almost every position. The second half started as the first had ended with Pontypridd in the ascendancy. Quick ball by replacement scrum-half Chris Jones and outside-half Joel Raikes set off the lightening fast wing Geraint Jones who showed his incredible pace to round the defence for an outstanding wingers try that was his first for the club. From the restart Pontypridd once again went on the offensive led by the pestering Steffan Jenkins and busy Ryan Jones. Some slick passing and movement by the backs, particularly centre Alex Logan saw scrum-half and man of the match Chris Jones cross for a deserved try that was converted by Joel Raikes. Again Pontypridd won the restart and the forwards went on a barging run up-field thanks to some great work by hooker Ben Larsen and the enthusiastic Gareth Cleaver who set up Steffan Jenkins for a hard earned try that was successfully converted by Joel Raikes. Following Steffan’s try and despite the one way traffic so far, Ynysybwl had not giving up. For a good five minute period they harried the Pontypridd team and kept them pinned in their own twenty two. The increasing pressure told and Ynysybwl scored a deserving try that was successfully converted for their only points of the day. But it wasn’t long before Pontypridd steadied the ship thanks to their huge pack, especially flankers Oliver Dalley and once again Steffan Jenkins who both constantly won opposition ball. Their good work along with that of Alex Knowles, saw them camped once again on the opposition twenty two for Gareth Cleaver to show great individual skill in intercepting opposition ball and showed great determination to barge his way over. The try was again converted by Joel Raikes. Fittingly it was Pontypridd who had the last word with some excellent passing by Chris Jones, the very impressive Kubilay Han Aytac, the diminutive Morgan Rees and slick Alex Logan to set off flying wing Geraint Jones to score his second try in the final play of the game for a final score of 65 – 7 to Pontypridd. This was an excellent performance by this young Pontypridd side that showed great composure to cope with the significant half time changes. Every single player did what was asked of them and performed remarkably on the day. For the second game in a row the forwards have shown great determination, whilst the handling by the backs has been unbelievably quick and well above that of many senior teams, as is evident in the twenty tries that have been scored in the two matches.
