Pontypridd hit fifth gear against a brave Beddau...
Page 2

Under 12’s Beddau 7 – 46 Pontypridd

This was a wonderful game of flowing rugby by both teams, with backs and forwards linking together throughout. The pace of the game was at times breathtaking, with the Pontypridd pack dominating possession for their backs to run from deep at every opportunity.

Under 12’s Beddau 7 – 46 Pontypridd

The first half started with a flurry as Pontypridd set off to play their expansive game and it wasn’t long before the Pontypridd flyhalf Joel Raikes went over for a deserved early try that he converted himself thanks to some good work by the forwards. The forwards were again lead forward by the ever present Jordan Jevons and the busy Nathan Payne, who both lead by example throughout. Some excellent play by the Pontypridd pack, particularly Will Thomas and Ben Larsen, saw Pontypridd camped in the Beddau twenty-two, when quick ball from a ruck saw the flying Josh Pritchard weave his way to the try line for an excellent try.

But it wasn’t all one way traffic, soon after Josh’s try, Beddau hit back. With good linking by forwards and backs saw our very own on loan player Liam Williams go over for a brilliantly taken try under the post that was successfully converted. From the restart normal service was resumed as Pontypridd exerted increasing pressure on the Beddau defence that successfully held up the Pontypridd attacks on the line on several occasions. Eventually Nathan Payne broke the deadlock diving over for a perfect flankers try, showing a great body angle to force himself over despite the attention of several Beddau forwards.

Impressive in the first half were centre Josh Pritchard who made some fantastic breaks as did wing Kubilay Aytac. Prop Johnathan Griffin played well, whilst second row Dan Williams was at the heart of winning many rucks or mauls, flanker Nathan Payne had a fantastic half deputising well on the wing at times before being substituted at half-time. Mickey was his usual busy self at centre keeping the opposition on the back foot with his rush defence along with fullback Garin Rossiter, whilst scrum-half Chris Jones looked sharp and supplied good clean ball for outside-half Joel Raikes to get his backs moving.  Half time score 17 – 7 to Pontypridd.

The second half started with Pontypridd in total command thanks to excellent interplay by the backs and forwards. A break down the blind-side saw the huge Michael Connor barge his way through several defenders to score a fantastic solo try to get his side going. Soon after the restart, it was the same move again that saw him score his second, though credit should go to hooker Jordan Jevons, flanker/winger Steffan Jenkins along with scrum-half Chris Jones who’s interplay, support and quick passing in contact created the break for Michael Connor to score his second try.

Not to be shown up by the forwards, Pontypridd outside-half Joel Raikes made a fantastic blind side break that saw him score a wonderful solo try thanks again to quick ball from the forwards and particularly scrum-half Chris Jones.  It was this quick ball from the forwards that set up many of Pontypridd’s attacks, thanks to good work by Alex Knowles and Oliver Dalley whose support play in the tight was particularly impressive.  It was their efforts that tied in the Beddau defence, for quick ball to set the hugely impressive substitute centre Oliver Bailey to dummy the remaining defence before scoring a wonderful solo try under the posts that was successfully converted by Joel Raikes.

Though the best try of the game came from the resulting kick off, with fullback Dale Hughes catching the ball by his won try line before dancing through almost the entire Beddau team as he made his way to the halfway line before feeding a beautiful pass to Oliver Bailey on his outside, who then looped around the remaining defenders to score a dramatic diving try under the posts that again was converted by Joel Raikes for a final score of 46 – 7 to Pontypridd.

Impressive for Pontypridd in the second half were the huge flying wing Michael Connor and the determined Oliver Dalley. Whilst Alex Knowles and Steffan Jenkins really put themselves around winning much of the loose ball that propelled the team forward. Joel Raikes gave an awesome display at outside-half, feeding excellent ball to the powerful centre partnership of Oliver Bailey and Liam Williams, both of whom looked hugely impressive and linked well with winger Morgan Rees who gave a solid display in defence. Morgan and Oliver also linked well with the mercurial fullback Dale Hughes who looked sharp on his return from injury and was his usual elusive self, having had a solid game despite being out of position.

This was a wonderful game of flowing rugby by both teams, with backs and forwards linking together throughout. The Pontypridd players ran fantastic angles throughout the match, creating opportunities for others around them, with sharp inter passing that senior players would be proud of, creating many of their try scoring opportunities. The pace of the game was at times breathtaking, with the Pontypridd pack dominating possession for their backs to run from deep at every opportunity. Full praise should go to the Beddau players who at no point gave up and despite what the score line might suggest, played well. They were unfortunate to come against a strong Pontypridd side that played some of the best rugby seen this season.

This would have been a perfect game for Pontypridd had it not been for an unfortunate incident on the final whistle. As the referee was playing advantage to Beddau after stating it was the last play of the match; the Beddau player Ethan Coombes received an awkward high ball, as he caught it at full stretch he was tackled by the powerful Joel Raikes. It was a legitimate big hit that on another occasion would have been applauded as an awesome tackle and no blame is associated to Joel who did nothing wrong, as confirmed by the referee along with the Beddau coaches.

Unfortunately Ethan was caught under the ribs in the lower back and being full stretch he then landed awkwardly. As a result an Ambulance had to be called and we’re currently waiting to hear news on his condition, but we all hope that he is only bruised and will recover quickly.

All involved with Pontypridd Under 12’s would like to express our best wishes to Ethan and wish him a full and speedy recovery.
