Nelson 10 A-Side Tournament Under 12’s: Ponty Shine, but rule changes deny them…
Page 2

The final score saw the board showing Ystrad Mynach as overall winners with Ponty as runners up, but a late complaint by St Albans saw their abandoned match classed as a draw that awarded them two points, thereby given them second place, one point in front of Ponty???

Ponty won their first two matches outright. With St Albans having walked off during an early match against Tonyrefail, thereby conceding the game and scoring 0 points; the tournament was left between Pontypridd and Ystrad Mynach for first and second. Both teams played a hard tackling but expansive game and with several Ponty players going down with injuries during the match, it was Ystrad Mynach who came up trumps with a late try to win the best match of the tournament.

With second place supposedly guaranteed Ponty made extensive substitutions during their final match against St Albans. The substitutions obviously disrupted the flow of the game, but Ponty could easily have won or drawn with some late efforts denied by the referees whistle. The board showed Ystrad Mynach as overall winners with Ponty as runners up, but a late complaint by St Albans saw their abandoned match classed as a draw that awarded them two points, thereby given them second place, one point in front of Ponty.

This was gut wrenching for this young Pontypridd team as they could possible have won the final match had the substitutions not been made and had they known they were fighting for second place. Regardless of this, it was a valiant effort throughout the tournament and there were excellent performances by every Pontypridd player who took to the field.

Pontypridd 15 – 0 Tonyrefail

Pontypridd 5 – 10 St Alban [8 a-side]
