PONTYPRIDD v ABERDARE & BRECON U9’s

UNDER 9’sAberdare 0 Pontyridd 60

The sun might have been shining when Ponty arrived at Aberdare, but the wind was icy cold, cutting straight through the jovial end of season atmosphere. These were the last regular games of the season and would be a measure of how much the boys have improved during it’s course as Ponty had played Aberdare in October and were grateful to come away with two close, hard fought victories, now in April they were hoping to keep their season long unbeaten record intact.

Aberdare and Brecon had already played and provided a close fought game full of excitement, entertainment and scores, as Jack Leyton led out his team proudly resplendent in their new kit kindly sponsored by HBG Construction, and arranged by Andrew Cavell, who have been tremendous supporters of the boys all season long. The supporters were naturally a little apprehensive having just witnessed their opponents, and a little worried that this could prove to be a match too far!

Any doubts were however, again quickly laid to rest by the boys who put in a simply awesome performance that this spectator is struggling to put into words. The movement, tackling, passion, determination and teamwork all came together in one exquisite display of rugby. Aberdare had no answer and were left tackling ghosts as Ponty players glided through their opponents offloading just before contact, or showing individual glimpses of genius to score 7 tries in the first half.

The second half started with Aberdare in possession but unable to break away from their own tryline. Despite a number of player changes at half time and the game already won, Ponty showed their steely side matched the flair so evident before the break, tackling and driving their opponents back over their own try line time and time again. Finally after 4 minutes the floodgates opened again and Ponty went on to score a further 5 tries, and demonstrated that not only did they start the season well, but as a team they have developed tremendously throughout the season.

Try scorers: Carl Blacker, Griff Lloyd 4, Josh Barnes 2, Owain Morris, Dafydd Smith, Jac Smith, Chris Temple, Callum Hall and Kiellan Mahoney.

Game 2 Brecon 5 Pontypridd 40

Ponty are off to Brecon next week to play in their tournament, the same tournament that this group of players won in superb style last season. Now Callum Hall led out his players to face their prospective hosts confident in the knowledge that earlier in the season they had inflicted a heavy defeat on Brecon. They say the sun shines on the righteous and today the sun certainly shone on Pontypridd as the team started as they had finished against Aberdare.

Pace, power, skill all in abundance and throughout the team as Brecon were dominated and blitzed. Whenever they were able to gain possession the ferocious incessant pressure exerted by the Ponty defence meant that Brecon were only ever going backwards. Their players, as Aberdare had done earlier tried bravely, but in vain to resist the irresistible force in black white and red shirts before them but to no avail.

The half time break saw Ponty 15 – 0 nil up and signalled another wholesale player exchange, yet the pressure and pride and passion if anything intensified with the boys going on to score a further 5 tries in the second period!

Try Scores: Carl Blacker, Owain Morris, Dafydd Smith, Rhodri Smith, Callum Hall, Owen Lloyd, Griff Lloyd, Josh Barnes.

The regular season now finished the boys can look back with tremendous pride on their performances, undefeated in a whole season is a superb achievement. The early season promise had faded in the dark rain-sodden gloom of January and February when individual glory rather than team success took hold, but cometh the spring, cometh the sunshine and the dazzling ‘sexy’ rugby exemplified by Wales in their Six Nations victory, not only returned in Ponty colours but has been taken to new highs!

There are now 4 Tournaments remaining, Brecon, Barkers Butts (in Coventry), Abercynon and Ponty’s own to finish with, where foes, both old and new will be providing the team with it’s severest challenge so far. Each week sees the supporters cheering and applauding on their team, their initial nerves and apprehension inevitably replaced by the joy of watching their team not only win, but win with passion and flair, can this continue? Time will tell!
