A bright and sunny morning welcomed Pontypridd for their initial two games of the new season. The players were excited and looking forward to their first taste of ‘real tackling’. The opponents were the proud Pencoed team who recently won a tournament, beating a strong Bridgend Athletic team in the final.

At the kick off the tension in the air was palpable, with nervous parents of the Pontypridd team wondering how their lads will cope with the more physical game?

The nerves quickly turned to delight as Ponty, captained in the first game by Dafydd Smith, took the game to the opponents and pushed them back to their try line time and time again, showing an enviable degree of teamwork, skill and brute force.

Just before half time, Jay Jones picked the ball up from the bottom of a ruck, and reminiscent of Dwayne Peel at his best, dived through the Pencoed players, his red hair a blur, to score the first try of this new season. The try was just reward for the boys’ efforts and a fair reflection on the passage of play in the first half.

The second half continued in much the same pattern, Ponty growing in confidence and restricting their opponents to the odd breakout that was quickly halted by some heroic tackling. The final score remained one try to nil and showed great credit to the hard work all the players and coaches had put in over the summer months, the question everybody was now asking was could they repeat the feat in the second match?

Captain Callum ‘Tucker’ Hall led his players out; the coaches had made a number of changes for this game, showing the great strength in depth and quality of the squad of players at their disposal.

The match was expected to be even harder than the first, Pencoed would after all be out for revenge! The players had learnt much in the first game and as a consequence, their teamwork and technique was even higher in the second match. Most of the game was played within sight of the Pencoed try line as Ponty exerted the pressure and finally it told as Carl Blacker scored a well worked try shortly before half time.

Pencoed came back well in the second half, but tries by Lloyd and Grufydd ‘greased lightning’ Lloyd sealed a well deserved and hard fought 3-0 victory.

The Pencoed players and supporters were a credit to their club, their sportsmanship, endeavour and behaviour being of the highest standard, and Ponty will now look to build on their all round team performance in the next game and would all like to wish Jack Leyton a speedy recovery from the broken wrist he suffered.

TRY Scorers Carl Blacker, Lloyd? and Grufydd Lloyd
