Page 1 of 2 Under 9’s Pontypridd 45 - 0 NelsonThis weekend saw the Ponty U9’s travelling to Nelson, a team we had played in previous seasons, and lucky enough to have beaten, but this campaign every team is an unknown quantity as it the boys first season of ‘proper tackling’
After their heroics against Pencoed last week the players were in a much more confident mood as they now know what to expect by way of a physical challenge! The parents too demonstrated a much more relaxed air, only biting their nails half way down before the match! Captain for the match was one of last weeks try scorers Cal Blacker, and straight from the kick off Ponty immediately continued the fine form they had shown previously, Griff ‘greased lightning’ Lloyd scoring in the first two minutes. The tackling, workrate and commitment shown by the young players were exemplary with Nelson unable to break out from the shadow of their own try line in the first half. Ponty have a number of fine individual players, but the key to their success is their outstanding teamwork which resulted in further tries by Carl Blacker, Rhodri Smith (twice), Jay Jones and Chris Temple meaning at half time Ponty led by 30 points to 0. The second half started in a similar vein to the first, Nelson to their credit bravely trying their hardest to force their way back into the game, but Ponty’s defence being nothing short of awesome, keeping their opponents pegged back in their own half. The Ponty coaches had changed a number of players for the second half, all the squad being desperate to play, and the replacements continued the good work shown in the first half, as Callum ‘Tucker’ Hall crossed the Nelson line 3 minutes into the second half. Ponty’s dominance then led to Jay Jones, playing as usual like a Pocket Battleship, crossing for his second, before Lloyd Owens rounded off the match with the final try of the match. It was so satisfying to see Ponty build on their performance of last week developing their skill levels and gelling together so effectively as a team. Originally we were supposed to be playing Porth, and we would like to thank the coaches and players of Nelson for their help and co-operation in arranging this match at the last minute, their players tried hard throughout the game and their club should rightly be proud of them! TRY Scorers: Griff Lloyd, Carl Blacker, Rhodri Smith (2), Jay Jones (2), Chris Temple, Callum Hall and Lloyd Owens. Add as favourites (40) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 434
