Page 1 of 2 Pontypridd Under 10’s v Ynysybwl Under 10’s Another Sunday morning with the Ponty boys chomping at the bit to continue their winning streak against what has proven to be one of our bogey sides over the last few years.
Ynysybwl kicked off and Ponty immediately showed their intentions with mason Pritchard carrying the ball well before passing to second row Rhys Grainger who found himself on the wing. The ball was recycled and Adam Ashford had a strong run but his offload was knocked on. From the scrum good Ponty defense forced a line out and from good ball by Daniel Griffiths the ball found its way into Jasper Powell’s hands who put his head down and galloped over from 20 yards to score Ponty’s first try. Converted by Mason Pritchard. Ponty continued to pile on the pressure but to Ynysybwl’s credit their tackling held firm. Ynysybwl had a defensive line out and a good catch and drive put Ponty on the back foot but true to form Jasper Powell appeared from the back of the maul with the ball and flew like an exocet missile towards the try line only for an excellent last ditch tackle forced him into touch. From the line out the ball was tipped into the air and was collected by Daniel Griffiths who dived over to score. From the kick off Callum Pearce caught the ball and started a move which saw Ponty advance up the field with great passing from backs and forwards but Lucas Hickman was held up just short, the ball was recycled quickly and try machine Morgan Burgess crashed over for Ponty’s third try. Converted by Mason Pritchard. Before the supporters had time to get their breath back from the boys last exciting passage of play Ponty were at it again with Jasper Powell running hard at the Ynysybwl defense and then setting the ball up for Lucas Hickman to score. Converted by Callum Pearce. Half Time: Pontypridd 26 Ynysybwl 0 The usual changes came at half time but did not disrupt the fast flowing rugby that the young Ponty boys were playing. Ponty continued to pile on the pressure and from a scrum 10 meters out a try looked destined with a 2 man overlap but the opportunity was missed. From the line out Shawn Bowditch read the scrum half’s pass and intercepted the ball to score that he also converted. To their credit the Ynysybwl boys never gave up and pressurized the Ponty line forcing a try from a charged down kick. The try was converted. The conceding of the try did not stop Ponty from continuing with their Barbarian style rugby and a good switch move brought Adam Ashford on the crash ball only for him to slip and catch a knee right in the head. Despite wanting to carry on the lump on his eye was growing at a rate of knots and he was forced to leave the field. The injury disrupted the Ponty boys and their game went a little scrappy and it was the Ynysybwl boys who finished the stronger and a good move saw them score in the corner. The try was converted. Full Time: Pontypridd 33 Ynysybwl 14 Scorers: Tries: Jasper Powell, Morgan Burgess, Daniel Griffiths, Lucas Hickman, Shawn Bowditch. Conversions: Mason Pritchard 2, Callum Pearce, Shawn Bowditch The rugby that the boys played in the first half was probably the best rugby of the season and showed their determination to lay down the jinx of coming away from the ‘Bwl’ with yet another defeat. Well done boys and also a big thank you to Lewis Allen who although not selected for this weeks match still appeared on the touch line to shout for his team mates. A lot of thought went into the choosing of this week’s man of the match with a lot of names being mentioned but in the end it was decided by the coaches that this week’s Man of the Match was Daniel Griffiths.
