The boys gathered at Taff Vale Park for their long awaited first game of 2008. With the weather conditions finally allowing a game of rugby to go ahead it was Rhiwbina who started the game kicking off to the eager Ponty players.
Mason Pritchard fielded the kick off and kicked back into the Rhiwbina half, Rhiwbina who are always a well drilled outfit collected the ball and moved the ball across field, good tackling from the Ponty boys kept them penned into their own half but then a nicely worked move saw the Rhiwbina boys work an overlap to open the scoring with a nice try in the corner which was converted. From the restart Ponty attacked and put pressure on the Rhiwbina backs and forced a knock on, from the scrum Ponty worked a move but good tackling held them out. The game was being played at a great pace with both sides running the ball well. Ponty continued to look for the score to bring them back into the game and a great run from wing Lucas Hickman saw him streak up the touchline only for one of the Rhiwbina boys to prevent a try with a great cover tackle forcing him into touch. From the line out Rhiwbina passed the ball along the backs and a rash high tackle from Jasper Powell yielded a penalty and also saw him have to leave the field for 5 minutes for a “cooling off” period. Rhiwbina kicked the ball downfield from the penalty but it was fielded by Mason Pritchard who shipped the ball out to Morgan Burgess for him to go on one of his mazy runs but again failed to breach the strong defence of Rhiwbina and was tackled 10 yards out, great rucking by the Rhiwbina forwards turned the ball over and with so many Ponty boys tied in to the ruck managed to move the ball to the wing to score which was also converted. Ponty continued to pressure and kept Rhiwbina on the back foot and in their own half but were unable to cross for the try. Half Time – Ponty 0 Rhiwbina 14 From the kick off poor tackling from Ponty saw one of the big Rhiwbina forwards run straight through them to score their third try, which was converted. After a sharp blast from the Ponty coaches about concentration they went back on the offensive and after a good move saw Ponty camped on the opposition try line but just could not break through, Rhiwbina managed to steal the ball but a great charge down by Greggor McCain saw the ball trickle over the dead ball line before he could dive on it. From the 22 drop out Rhiwbina set up a series of phases and managed to work the ball up field to score their fourth try which was also converted. This score came against the run of play and although the game was nearing the end the Ponty boys didn’t let their heads drop and continued to push for a score that their efforts deserved. This score finally came when a good move by the Ponty backs saw them advance downfield and then with the forwards tacking over and setting up clean ball for the scrum half to ship out, Adam Ashford scored in the corner. Converted by Mason Pritchard. The game continued to flow back and forth with both teams giving 100% in both defence and attack; Rhiwbina attacked and managed to score in the corner only for the referee to disallow it due to an injury which had stopped the game. The game was restarted with a scrum and a quick blind side move saw Rhiwbina go over in the same corner which this time was allowed, the conversion was successful and the final whistle was blown. Full Time – Ponty 7 Rhiwbina 35 Scorers: Try: Adam Ashford Conversion: Mason Pritchard Team: Ben Kondella, Greggor McCain, Adam Morris, Rhys Grainger, Jasper Powell, Callum Pearce, Mason Pritchard, Morgan Burgess, Lucas Hickman, Adam Ashford, Subs: Shaun Bowditch, Daniel Griffiths, Lewis Allen, Harley Jones, Lloyd Harris. Although the boys were defeated today they showed great commitment and continued to play right up to the final whistle. With so many weeks missed by the bad weather and one or two of the boys looking a little bigger round the waist (due to excessive amounts of alcohol over Christmas!!!) you could see the rustiness start to disappear as the game progressed. The coaches decided that their man of the match was Shaun Bowditch. Add as favourites (32) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 355
