Page 1 of 2 Ponty Under 10’s V Pencoed Under 10’s The boys turned up at Coed y Lan school fields with revenge on their minds. Pencoed having inflicted their only defeat this season. With both teams having large squads it was decided by the coaches during the week that there would be two games played today. Ponty who normally have ample players to choose from were hit by illness before kick off with 3 of their regular players unable to attend, which left only 13 boys to play two games against a strong Pencoed side who turned up with 19 players.
The first game started with Pencoed kicking off, Ponty knocked on and from the resulting scrum Pencoed showed their intensions by crashed over for the games first try which was also converted. From the restart Pencoed advanced up field but the Ponty defence held firm. Ponty had a penalty from a high tackle and a quick tap and go gained good ground but were tackled just short of the line but managed to force Pencoed into touch to set up an attacking line out. From the line out the ball was set up by the forwards and then passed out to the backs and a good passing movement saw Adam Ashford score in the corner. Converted by Mason Pritchard to bring the scores level. The game was being played at a frantic pace with both sides giving their all and tackling their socks off but it was Pencoed who got on top when Ponty were penalised and from the resulting penalty they set up a good rolling maul and crossed for their second try which was converted. From the restart Ponty attacked with pace and a good run from Lucas Hickman saw him set up a ruck and quick ball was delivered to Morgan Burgess who cut through the Pencoed defence but unfortunately ran over the dead ball line. From the scrum Pencoed kicked up field which was well fielded by Mason Pritchard who passed the ball out to Morgan Burgess and this time managed to stop short of the dead ball line to score. The try was converted by Mason Pritchard. Half time Ponty 14 Pencoed 14. Ponty started the second half and showed good defence in keeping Pencoed penned in their own half and from a maul in the 22 Adam (Ox) Morris burst through but a last ditch tackle denied him a try. A scrum on the half way line saw Pencoed break quickly and caught Ponty off guard to race downfield and score in the corner . Ponty continued to push forward but you could see that the Pencoed boys had been well trained in the art of drift defence and Ponty could not gain much ground. Ponty had a scrum on their own 5 meter line and a good box kick by scrum half Callum Pearce saw the ball land in the Pencoed half and a great chase from Adam Ashford and Lewis Allen forced Pencoed to knock on, but Ponty could not capitalise. With both sides giving everything the boys from both teams began to tire and it was Pencoed who finished the game with a try in the corner which was converted.. Final Score: Ponty 14 Pencoed 26 Scorers: Tries: Adam Ashford, Morgan Burgess. Conversions: Mason Pritchard 2 Team: Callum Pearce (c), Adam Morris, Gethin Llewellyn, Greggor McCain, Ben Kondella, Daniel Griffiths, Mason Pritchard, Morgan Burgess, Adam Ashford, Lucas Hickman. Subs: Liam Morton, Lewis Allen, Shaun Bowditch Man of the Match: Morgan Burgess The second game started with Pencoed fielding almost an entire new team where as Ponty were left with a bare 10 as injuries to 3 of the boys in the first game ruled them out. Ponty kicked off and the ball was well fielded by the Pencoed winger who ran strongly at the Ponty defence but was tackled into touch just short of the Ponty line. From the line out a great break from outside half Shaun Bowditch saw him cut through the first line of defence before being tackled but the Ponty forwards got there quickly to set up a maul and Liam Morton broke from the back to go half the length of the field to open the scoring. Converted by Lewis Allen. Ponty continued to attack from all areas of the field but strong defence from Pencoed kept them out. Half Time Ponty 7 Pencoed 0 Pencoed made a few changes at half time bringing back some of their boys from the first game showing that despite winning the first game didn’t want to lose this one. Pencoed kicked off and a good catch by Shaun Bowditch started a Ponty attack and made good ground but was unable to get the ball out and a good chance was lost. Ponty continued to dominate in all areas and eventually after a kick up field by Pencoed, Shaun Bowditch collected the ball and passed it to Lewis Allen who jinked in and out and beat 5 defenders (some of them twice) before scoring in the corner. Final Score: Ponty 12 Pencoed 0 Scorers: Tries: Liam Morton, Lewis Allen Conversion: Lewis Allen Team: Gethin Llewellyn (c), Greggor McCain, Daniel Griffiths, Morgan Burgess, Ben Kondella, Liam Morton, Shaun Bowditch, Lucas Hickman, Lewis Allen, Callum Pearce Man of the Match: Greggor McCain The coaches must say well done to all the boys, especially the ones who played 2 full games of hard fast physical rugby even though they were almost on their knees at the end of the second game they played until the final whistle and tackled their hearts out to stop Pencoed scoring. Losing the first game but then bouncing back to win the second shows great commitment and a strong mentality. Keep it going... Add as favourites (50) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 946
