As a prelude to the Wales Deaf International XV versus Welsh Charitables on Sunday at Sardis Road, the youngest section of our mini rugby sides played a round robin against their Llantwit Fardre and Beddau counterparts.

Under 8's: Pontypridd RFC 50 - 25  Llantwit Fardre RFC

Pontypridd playing their first game of the season on Sardis Road in a mini tournament involving Llantwit Fardre and Beddau picked up where they left off against Llantwit the week before.  The blitz defence once again work well putting Llantwit on the back foot and enabling us to take 6 tags without them scoring.  In attack Pontypridd were very clinical running in 6 tries without reply in the first half.  Several changes at half time enabled Rhys Morris and Kilan Mahoney to make their Under 8's debuts which they capped with fine performances.  To their credit Llantwit Fardre made a strong come back in the second half and played some great rugby and scored some cracking tries.  Pontypridd did hold back a little and only fantastic tagging from man of the match Gruffydd Lloyd kept us in the game.  Ponty then found a little more gas in the tank to score 4 more tries through good support play.

Try Scorers for Pontypridd: Callum Pearce (3), Lucas Hickman (3), with one try apiece were Mason Pritchard, Dafydd Smith, Harley Jones and Josh Barnes.

Under 8's:  Pontypridd RFC 30 - 5  Beddau RFC

Beddau formed a formidable opposition in this game and physically were much bigger and stronger than Pontypridd.  Beddau employed a blitz defence that was similar to Pontypridd and used a lift rough stuff to try and soften Pontypridd up.  In true Ponty sprint the boys fronted up well and in a titanic first half where both sets of players went at each other Pontypridd has the slight edge making four or five fantastic last tags a meter from our try line to keep Beddau out.  This gave us confidence and our blitz defence started pushing Llantwit back when they had the ball.  A great handling move that involved 6 players lead to Josh Barnes scoring a brilliant try that will be a contender for try of the season.  A great run by Mason Pritchard lead to another try just before half time for a deserved 10-0 lead.

Beddau started the second half with a great try in the corner by Jordan Smith, this very much signalled "game on" to which Ponty raised the tempo.  Great tagging again kept Beddau out and a move that started behind our own line enabled Gruffydd Lloyd to sprint clear and score in the corner.  From then on Ponty just got better and better and showed very high skill levels where the players were inter linking and passing the ball around and trying everything they knew to score a try.  Mason Pritchard spotted a gap on the blind side to race clear put Ponty on the road to victory.  Beddau, to their credit came back at us once again only to knock the ball on by our own line for Gruffydd Lloyd to pick up and sprint the length of the field and score.  Lucas Hickman then finished off another well worked team try with some fancy footwork that Shane Williams would have been proud of to seal the victory 30 - 5 in Pontypridd's favour.  Beddau were probably one of the toughest teams we have played and among the best teams we will face.  The coaches would like to say well done to each and everyone of the players who were fantastic and who actually played as a team to win this game.  This was the best performance of the season and everyone was really proud of them.  Well done boys!

Try Scorers for Pontypridd:  Mason Pritchard (2),  Lucas Hickman (1),  Gruffydd Lloyd (2) and Josh Barnes (1).

Beddau's try was scored by Jordan Smith.

The excellent Gruffydd Lloyd can be seen photographed on www.ponty.net

In the other game of the competition Beddau defeated Llantwit Fardre 40 - 0.  Beddau's tries were scored by Regan Wilson (3), Joshua Thomas (2), Rhys Payne, Rhys Jones and Hywell Phillips.

Our other mini rugby teams played matches against Beddau RFC at Taff Vale Park, the results from there were:

Under 9's: Pontypridd RFC 25 - 0  Beddau RFC

Pontypridd Tries were scored by James Stallard (3) and Rowan Thomas (2).

Man of the match:  Ben Stephens

Under 10’s: Pontypridd RFC 0 - 21 Beddau RFC

This young Pontypridd side fought to the end in this entertaining local derby. With the first half a keenly contested affair with Kai Perry and James Herald outstanding in a fine team effort.  Pontypridd were unlucky to go into the interval 7 - 0 down.  Beddau began to get the upper hand in the second half and scored two excellent converted tries to seal the victory.

Beddau's try scorers were Sam Owen, Harri Rowlando and Liam Taylor. Ioan Ogelby kicked all three conversions.

Pontypridd Man of the match:  James Herald.

All of the players, coaches and parents wish to congratulate Kyle James and Dillon Lewis on gaining and cementing their places with Pontypridd District’s Under 11’s in this important DC Thomas season.  Well down Lads.

Under 11's: Pontypridd RFC 21 -  53 Beddau RFC

This was another difficult game for our under 11,s who were again missing 12 players through district commitments  and injuries.  That said the match did provide an opportunity for some of the less experienced players to gain some much needed match time following the spate of recent weather related fixture cancellations.  In a game reduced to 8 aside a late first half interception try by Beddau saw them take a deserved 17 - 7 interval lead.

The start of the second half saw both sides trading scores with Pontypridd rallying reducing the gap to 27 - 21 before the unfortunate loss through injury of centre Jamie Brooks.  With both sides now being reduced to seven aside, Beddau with their quicker back line took full advantage to score a further 26 unanswered points.  Pontypridd match captain Brad Charlton who, although being one of the newer members of the squad, turned in a man of the match performance in what was only his third game.

Try scorers for Pontypridd were Liam Burton, Blake Fear and Sion Jenkins who also put in a faultless kicking display with three conversions.

Beddau try scorers were James Davies (4), Alex Davies (2), James Manning (2) and Kieron Hedditch.  Elliot Barnett kicked three conversions and James Manning kicked one.

Pontypridd Man of the Match: Brad Charlton
