Under 8’s Pontypridd 40 - 20 Ystrad Rhondda The first game of the New year was up there as one of the teams best performances. The scores between the teams were evenly matched for the first half, but the Ponty stepped on the gas and put a few great tries on the board in the second half. Both Lucas Hickman and Callum Pearce are clear contenders for the 2012 Olympic games at the 100m sprint after the tries they scored today. Both boys ran almost the length of the pitch to score some classic tries. Gruffyd Lloyd could also make the line up for the sprints as his try was also a long dash to the line. Owain's try was a well planned effort in the far corner with Owain using his head by finding the right gaps between the defence and dashing over for a touchdown - a classic Owain try. Rhys Grainger's second try was a throwback to Phil Bennett's superb Barbarians side step moment, when Rhys completely took the defence by surprise by sidestepping and going over for final try of the game. Pontypridd Team: Harley Jones, Rhys Grainger (c), Gruffydd Lloyd, Callum Pearce, Mason Pritchard, Owain Morris, Dafydd Smith, Jay Jones, Lucas Hickman and Josh Barnes Subs: Iwan Cavil and Rhys Morris.

A good performance from the development side today made sure they came away with a well earned draw. There were some newer faces to the team, with Daniel Griffiths and Jack Layton in the strating line up. All the team played well and got themselves a turnover when they took Llantwit to 6 tages in the second half. Another good spell of tagging came when Ponty's demon tagger Jay Jones tagged anything that moved. Jay also carried the ball well and showed that he was always there to support his team mates as they offloaded to him when he dashed over for one of his two tries. Iwan Cavil chose a difficult route when he ran around the outside of the entire defence, but it paid off with a great try in the corner. Rhys Britton's solid performance and two tries ensured that the team came away with their heads held high. Well done boys !! Well done to Josh Barnes who volunteered to play for Llantwit as they were one short. Josh even scored one of Llantwit's tries, which made it hard to decide whether to cheer him on or shout for him to stop as he crossed the try line !!

Under 10's Pontypridd 7 – 5 Ystrad Rhondda Without their district players Dillon Lewis and Kyle James, hence only 12 players to pick from, Pontypridd defended on the back-foot for almost the entire game. Pontypridd showed remarkable resilience in the rucks, mauls and tackle areas. The only score of the first half was a try for Ystrad’s outstanding Gerwyn Coleman. The second half was much the same, with Pontypridd showing great defensive qualities. Towards the end of the game a lineout for Ystrad in their twenty two was fumbled and the whole ponty pack pounced to steal the ball for Morgan Rees to score a try that was successfully converted by Kai Perry and signalled the end of the game. Try scorer for Ystrad: Gerwyn Coleman. Try scorer for Pontypridd: Morgan Rees. Kai Perry kicked the conversion.
