Page 2 of 2 BLUES NORTH Under 16's (or Pontypridd Academy as I much prefer to call them) are the early leaders in the WRU Reebok Regional Championship thanks to a 24-8 victory over Blues South (Cardiff) at Leckwith Stadium.
The team is built around last season's Rhondda, Pontypridd and Heart of Wales under 15's Dewar Shield District sides, and contains several Pontypridd RFC players. Cardiff started the first half on top and led courtesy of a try from Nathan Hoosan and a penalty from Lauren Quick. However, the North took total control in the second half and ran away with the victory points and a bonus to boot. No 8 Garrick Legge (Pontypridd RFC & son of Dai), prop Richard 'Rhino' Powell (Pontypridd RFC & Adam's 'little' brother), wing Will Rose and full-back Sean Nicholas (both former Rhondda District Dewar Shield Winners) raced in for tries, while Nicholas added two conversions to round off an excellent night's work. Having defeated the Scarlets two weeks ago, the North, who under-achieved last season, assume top place. Meanwhile, at Stradey Park, the Ospreys missed out on a second successive victory of the season - going down 18-10 to the Llanelli superclub. Having beaten Newport in their opening game, the Ospreys might have fancied their chances of picking up a victory at the expense of Llanelli, who lost out to Blues North at Pontypridd on the opening night.
Next Wednesday, the U18's will take centre stage with the Ospreys taking on Cardiff at St Helen's and Llanelli entertaining Newport. Seven days later, the second round of matches in the U20's will get under way with Llanelli making the long journey to Caerphilly to meet Newport, while the Ospreys take on Cardiff at the Arms Park.
Back at under-16 level, Newport undertook an experiment this week by staging a game between their Reebok side and a Combined Gwent Districts side at Pandy Park, Cross Keys. The superclub won 8-5, but high performance manager Ron Schottle was pleased with the performance of the districts' XV. He said, "It was something we wanted to do and I am delighted we went through with it. "The weather ruined it as a spectacle, but in terms of identifying a new wave of players, it was a terrific exercise and one we will look to repeat."
