Page 1 of 2 Friday 7th October saw a combined districts team the Heart of Wales [Merthyr, Cynon, Brecon and Powys] take on the current DC Thomas Plate holders Rhondda District in a very entertaining game of pressure rugby and rush defence at it's best. Game was played in three twenty minute periods at Dowlais RFC.
Pontypridd was be represented by our very own under 11's player of the year last season Dale Hughes playing on the wing for Rhondda and our new second rower Steffan Jenkins playing in the pack for the Heart of Wales.
The first third of the game saw a dominant Rhondda score three unanswered tries through a wingers try by Callum Roberts, another by the centre Anthony Harris and an interception followed by a fifty yard dash by outside half Bobi Sheppard.
The second third of the game saw a number of changes by Rhondda who took the opportunity to blood some new players. The new players faired well and were unlucky to concede an interception try to the opposition. The return of some senior players in the final third of the game saw Rhondda captain James Parry go over twice, though one try was disallowed for a knock on. In the end it was a comfortable victory from Rhondda who played a very professional game from start to finish and would have scored many more tries had it not been for abbrassive defending by the Heart of Wales. The passing and movement by the Rhondda backs was breathtaking, combined with a huge powerful pack, they look very much one of the teams to beat this season, but are going to be tested even harder next week against a very strong Bridgend Districts [to be confirmed].
Dale had an impressive game on the wing and would have scored a couple of tries had it not been for the very committed defence by the Heart of Wales, inparticular our very own Steffan Jenkins who stood out as the catalyst of the defensive effort for the Heart of Wales, especially in the last third of the game.
This was Rhondda's second game of the season, their first game saw Rhondda under 12's take on Treorchy Comprehensive under 13's, with Rhondda coming away deserved winners 25 - 5, again with our own Dale Hughes giving the scoring pass for two tries and scoring one himself. Hence so far this season Rhondda District's have looked to continue as they ended last season. When the final game of last season saw Rhondda lift the DC Thomas Plate in an enthralling encounter against the North Welsh champions Eryri, with Rhondda winning on the day 19-5. Two Pontypridd players got on the score sheet that day with a try apiece, they were Dale Hughes and Aled Summerhill. Aled has since left Pontypridd to ply his trade at Treorchy and is also currently playing for Rhondda Schools under 11's, the club, players and coaches wish him well in his future rugby career.
