Page 1 of 2 Quarter Final Dewar Shield: District Under 15’s Rhondda 17 – 10 LlanelliAlmost 12 years ago the Treorchy Zebras recorded a famous victory over Llanelli at the Treorchy Oval and last Thursday 6 April the Rhondda District Under 15’s side had an opportunity to inflict the same result over the junior Scarlets on the same ground.
This was the last game in the quarter final pool stage of the Dewar Shield, the premier district competition in Wales, with home advantage in the semi-finals awaited the winners. From the outset Rhondda showed their intent to move the ball wide and wingers William Rose and James Sheppard caused panic in the Llanelli defence. Quick ball from a line-out enabled centre Sean Nicholas to round the full-back and score a spectacular try. Co-centre Thomas Rees soon added another following a powerful William Rose break. After a third try, Rhondda were flying and leading 17 – 0. but any thoughts they may have had of cruising to victory were rudely dispelled by Llanelli’s powerful pack in the second half. Llanelli scored two tries, but Rhondda clung on to win and can look forward to a home draw against Carmarthen in their ninth consecutive Dewar Shield semi final.
