RHONDDA settled first against fellow Dewar Shield quarter-finalists, Merthyr. The game was preceded by a minute's silence as a tribute to former Rhondda Schools secretary, Gweiry-dd Evans, who died recently and will be greatly missed. Callum Williams, (Cymmer), crossed for an early try, but Merthyr responded with a well-taken try of their own. Centre James Shepherd, (Cymmer), restored the Rhondda lead following good work by N° 8 Mark Jenkins and scrum-half Steffan Jones, (both Treorchy), and Sean Nicholas, (Treorchy), who converted. The Rhondda pack moved up a gear and Rhys Gillard, (Tonypandy), Kyle Evans, Adam Parry and captain Lenon Davies, (all Treorchy), revelled in close-quarter driving play. Wing William Rose, (Cymmer), smashed over from close range and centre Thomas Rees, (Treorchy), scored. Rhondda now look forward to the visit of Llanelli on Saturday, January 21, in the first leg of their quarter-final clash in the Dewar Shield. Pontypridd Under-13s 17 Rhondda 17 RHONDDA produced a remarkable rally to draw 17-17 after trailing 17-0 with just 10 minutes left and could have won with the last kick of the match. Pontypridd had the better of the early stages, but debutant Dean Evans, (Ferndale), produced some crunching tackles before captain and flanker Callum Thomas, (Tonyrefail), broke away to touch down for Lewis Williams, (Tonyrefail), to convert. A well-executed move involving Lewis Williams and Shaun Webber, (Ferndale), created space for Ryan Evans, (Tonyrefail), to score. Williams converted, and with the last play of the game outside-half Lewis Williams raced away to snatch a remarkable draw. Pontypridd Under-12s 5 Rhondda 5 RHONDDA defended with great spirit against Pontypridd, with Callum Phillips, (Cymmer), showing up well. Also in form were Bobi Shepherd and Luke Rees, (both Cymmer), Jack Foulkes, (Porth County), and the outstanding Dewi Walding, (Treorchy). Ponty opened the scoring through scrum-half Raikes, but Rhondda stormed back. Captain James Parry, (Treorchy), made some surging runs and was well supported by Walding and props Jack Dunning, (Treorchy), Bradley Watkins, (Cymmer). Replacement scrum-half Tim Williams, (Treorchy), released wing Dale Hughes, (Porth County), who dived over in the corner.
