Page 2 of 2 Local District Derby's two weeks in a row for Pontypridd District Rugby... Following a huge win over local rivals the Heart of Wales by 32 points to 5 last Wednesday, Pontypridd District have a far tougher match against one the most successful District in recent years when they take on Rhondda at under 12's and 13's in Hawthorn this coming Friday 29 September...
DISTRICT UNDER 13’S Heart of Wales 5 – 32 Pontypridd District PONTYPRIDD DISTRICT Under 13’s kicked off the new season with a very successful trial match where they fielded five debutants against the Heart of Wales at Aberdare RFC on Wednesday 20 September. The match began with the Heart of Wales playing into the very stiff breeze that was the remnant of a hurricane, but their forwards carried the ball well and dominated the opening exchanges. Despite this, Pontypridd were first to get on the score board after 10 minutes, with debutant Luc Williams (Llantwit Fardre RFC) beating the cover tackles with searing pace to cross under the posts, Rhys Hughes (Llantwit Fardre) converted for the early lead. Further HOW pressure proved to be fruitless and it was once again Luc Williams who showed a clean pair of heals to cross for his and Pontypridd’s second. HOW never gave up and their continuing pressure finally paid off as their powerful centre crossed underneath the posts to get the home team on the scoreboard. With the first of three periods drawing to a close it was Pontypridd who once again finished the stronger side, thanks to good scavenging work from back-row Steffan Jenkins (Pontypridd RFC) who was critical in setting Luc Williams off for his hatrick. Turning round in the second period and playing into the wind proved backs to the wall time for Pontypridd. During this period it was great to see some of the new boys stepping up to district rugby standard, with standout performances from Lewys Montague (Pontyclun RFC), Michael Connor (Pontypridd RFC) and recovering from an injury ravaged season Declun Williams (Beddau RFC). Despite these excellent performances, HOW managed to cross for a try thanks to their powerhouse pack. In the final period it was Pontypridd who made all the running despite have numerous players trying out alternative positions. Starting the period positively Ponty were quick to get on the attack with Jack Waite bossing the show from outside half and controlling his backline effectively. Unfortunately Jack’s all action style meant he picked up a nasty wrist injury whilst making a tackle, resulting in Ponty calling on the services of a third outside half in David Hooper. Experienced players Rory Woodland (Pontyclun RFC) and Josh Coleman (Porth Harlequins RFC) in the centre made all the running, cutting through a tiring HOW defence at will. After a break from Josh and good work from the front five, Max Watkins and debutant Michael Connor both crossed together for a shared try, with nobody being able to decide between them as they both had hold of the ball; so they should both get the credit. The final two tries of the evening went to Pontypridd’s back-line. Josh Coleman scored the first, followed by Rhys Taylor after a great show and go from Rory Woodland. All parties should be please with their efforts especially HOW who had played two periods into the wind and fielded some boys from this seasons U12’s, well done to their young boys. The final word must go to all the boys from Pontypridd District who have made selection for the next two game really difficult. Keep training and playing hard for your clubs boys. PONTY, PONTY, PONTY!!!! WELL DONE. TRY SCORERS for Pontypridd: Luc Williams (3), Michael Connor/Max Watkins, Josh Coleman and Rhys Taylor. Rhys Hughes kicked one conversion. Report by Ben Rose, Pontypridd District Coach & Development Officer. Representing Pontypridd RFC on the day were regular district players Joel Raikes, Josh Pritchard and Steffan Jenkins. Whilst making their district debuts were Johnathan Griffin and our Under 13’s captain Michael Connor. All played well and done the club proud. Congratulations especially to the barging Michael Connor who grabbed an excellent try on his district debut. THIS COMING FRIDAY

Whilst in the Rhondda team we are represented by our top try scorer Dale Hughes. Who there can forget the last time these sides met in that thrilling 5 all draw? It was one of the most tense and exciting junior matches ever played, with the scorer from both sides being Pontypridd RFC players. Joel Raikes scored a cracking try in the corner on the stroke of half time for Pontypridd District. Then in injury time at the end of the match, with Pontypridd leading 5 - 0, our very own Dale Hughes outstripped the Ponty defence to score for Rhondda just as the final whistle was about to blow...
