District Coaches review of Ponty v Rhondda
Page 2
On Thursday 17th November Rhondda District played Pontypridd District at under 12's, with Pontypridd winning by 21 - 12.  This game was reported at the time by our correspondent Neil Hughes, here's what the district coaches have to say...

Review by Ben Rose Pontypridd Districts Under 12's Coach

Pontypridd District U12’s had their second fixture of the season against Rhondda District at Treorchy RFC on Thursday 17th November. The game was used by both teams as a chance to introduce some of the fringe players to district rugby. During the first of three periods it was the home side who created the first score. With the night closing in and the temperature dropping the Pontypridd side could have wilted under the ferocity of the Rhondda pack. With an injury to the fiery Jack Waite Ponty were forced to make their first change introducing Pontyclun starlet Rory Woodland. After great work by the forwards Rory was given his first touch and he sliced through the defence and beat the cover to score. The try was converted by Rhys Hughes of Llantwit Fadre.

In the second stanza the game opened up and could have swung either way. The Rhondda side were unlucky to score on a number of occasions and so were Pontypridd. Notably Tom Fears also of Llantwit Fadre who on his first appearance scorched down the wing only to be caught brilliantly two meters from the line. The game then swung the way of Rhondda who were camped on the Ponty line and looked very close to scoring but ponty’s defence held up, just! In a moment of brilliance defence was turned into attack, Rory collected the ball from behind his try line with the Rhondda bearing down on him he managed to break down he wing fending off all would be tacklers. Looking to be cornered Rory somehow fed Josh Pritchard who had too much pace for the cover as he scorched in from 50 meters. Once again the try was converted by Rhys Hughes.

Rory added a third try for Pontypridd and Rhys completed an immaculate day with the boot 100%. Pontypridd showed the talent in the squad by playing the last 15 minutes without the usual suspects and only conceded one score. it was body on the line stuff from all the boys with notable performances from Paul Minty, Steffan Jenkins, Morgan Edwards and David Hooper, an ex-Rhondda player. Once again thanks for all the support from the parents for turning out on such a cold night. I must give a special mention to David Watkins forwards coach who celebrated turning 21(ish). Well done boys let hope for the same again against Afon Nedd on Sunday 27th Nov at the Dog Track in Hawthorn K.O. 12 noon.

Review by Chris Jones Rhondda District Coach

Captain James Parry (Treorchy) again gave his all against Pontypridd, making several surging runs.  He was well supported by prop Garyn Daniels (Cymmer), Pheon Radfield (Cymmer) and Dewi Walding (Treorchy), who brought off one superb try-saving tackle.  Sam Jones (Cymmer) played well at scrum-half, but the ball seldom reached the speedy Callum Roberts (Cymmer) and Dale Hughes (Porth County).  Roberts made the most of his infrequent possession to round the defence for a try converted by Bobbi Sheppard (Cymmer).  A neat blind-side break by Sam Jones produced a try for Dale Hughes.  Rhondda did well in terms of possession, but were beaten by three long range tries.
