Brilliant Welsh turn up the heat in their semi-final challenge
Page 2

WALES kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals of the 2006 U19 World Championships with a decisive five tries to one win over the Scots at the Exiles RFC ground in Dubai yesterday, writes Huw S Thomas.

Under 19's Wales 35 - 5 Scotland

They got the four points for the win and a bonus point for scoring over four tries and will now need to do the same against Romania if they are to have an outside chance of getting into the top four in the table - and a semi-final spot after Thursday's games.

The game was as good as won in the opening five minutes when Scarlets flanker Josh Turnbull and Dragons centre Ashley Smith finished off heavy forward pressure with tries converted by Sale fly-half Rhys Jones.

Bigger and more abrasive than the lightweight Scots, Wales constructed another try for Ospreys No 8 Sam Kiley, but their fourth just before half-time was down to a poor Scottish pass and an exciting breakaway from Dragons wing Jimmy Norris.

With accurate Jones kicking all the conversions, Wales were clear 28-0 at the break and coasting.

Coach Justin Burnell brought on a lot of replacements in the heat and brave Scotland flung themselves into defence to keep Wales to one more try from side-stepping Blues lock and captain Bradley Davies.

Wing Colin Goudie ran brilliantly from 50 metres for a well-deserved Scottish try with just five minutes to go and Wales were content to run down the clock to conserve energy for Thursday's game against Romania, who were beaten 88-9 by Australia.

Wales U19: Rhys Priestland (Scarlets); Alec Jenkins (Scarlets), Gareth Maule (Dragons), Ashley Smith (Dragons), Jimmy Norris (Dragons); Rhys Jones (Sale/ Exiles), Darren Allinson (Scarlets - Robert Lewis 60); Hugh Gustafson (Scarlets - Nicholas Eaves 65), Ken Owens (Scarlets - Marc Jones 36), Jamie Corsi (Dragons - Keiron Jenkins 50), Bradley Davies (Blues, captain), James Down (Blues - Lou Reed 35), Josh Turnbull (Scarlets - Matthew Larsen 70), Sam Kiley (Ospreys). Lewis Evans (Dragons - Dan Franks 50)

Scorers: Tries - J Turnbull, A Smith, S Kiley, J Norris, B Davies; cons - R Jones (5).

Scotland U19: Try - C Goudie.

Results: Wales 35 Scotland 5, Australia 88 Romania 9, New Zealand 50 Japan 0, Ireland 18 France 26, South Africa 44 Samoa 0, England 28 Argentina 23.
