FROM CARDIFF BLUES WEBSITE: | Brecon RFC's annual mini rugby festival proved yet another huge attraction as people in their thousands flocked to Parc-de-Pugh for a day of spectacular action showcasing the very best of junior rugby from across the county and beyond.
| | Six hundred children aged between seven and twelve produced a standard of rugby that was as enthralling as it was entertaining as the crowd would certainly have testified after the event. All Brecon RFC's rugby sides excelled on the day in the various age groups - U8s through to U11s - but it was the U9s who stole the show. Led by coach Simon Woods and Kevin Phillips, the team galloped through the preliminary stages to earn their place in the final against Abercraf and after nearly 30 minutes of pulsating rugby between two evenly matched sides, a draw was declared and the trophy held aloft by both captains. Winners of the various age groups were as follows: Pontypridd (U8s), Brecon and Abercraf (U9s), Pontypridd (U10s) and Pontypridd (U11s). The festival concluded with the prize giving spearheaded by Cardiff Blues scrum-half, Mike Phillips and team-mate, Andy Powell from Brecon. A special thanks must go out to all coaches, players, parents and of course to all Brecon RFC members and sponsors who worked so hard to produce what must now be regarded as one of the Wales's leading mini rugby festivals. Main sponsors Mitchell and Meredith chartered accountants, backed up by Cantef Adventure Farm, Christ College Brecon, P&L Builders, RW Evans and Son Monumental Sculptors, Crai Organics and The Three Horseshoes in Groesfford all deserve a special mention because without their generosity, this tournament could basically not take place. Brecon RFC now has a total of 170 dedicated children playing their rugby at U7 through to U16 level and their commitment, drive and passion serves as a huge credit to the club. Well done to everyone. |
