Page 2 of 2 Pontypridd 41 - 12 Carmarthen QuinsThough scrappy at times this proved a good warm up for the upcoming campaign and gave opportunities for the upcoming players to get a taste of action at Sardis Road...
This pre-season warm-up match was played to a regular format of two periods of forty minutes each, but with numerous changes made by both teams during the course of the afternoon. Pontypridd dominated the opening exchanges territorially, but making unforced errors and struggling to achieve a breakthrough. With Damien Welch taking good line out ball and scrum half Tom Dickens proving to be a real handful, Ponty were well on top. The home team’s scoring account was opened with a penalty kicked by outside half Dylan Jones. A quick tap penalty taken by Dickens set Ponty off on the attack, the move carried on by a neat break from full back Kristian Baller and rounded off with a try for wing Nathan Trowbridge. A well judged cross kick from Dafydd Lockyer set up flanker Justin Benfield for another score, before another sweet passing move cross field allowed wing Gareth John to dart over for a try, the score converted by Baller, to give Ponty an interval lead of 20 pts to 0. Ponty were again slow to build up momentum in the second half, before no 8 Dale McIntosh thrust over the line for a try, converted by Celyn Ashton. The home team were in the ascendancy, busy scrum half Gareth Jones feeding a scoring pass to winger Dan Hitchings, with Ashton again on target with the conversion. Some hard driving play from the Quins allowed them to apply pressure on the home line, their pack barging over for Andrew Jacobs to claim a try. Ponty now had to work hard in defence, the visitors’ pressure again turned into points as Andrew Thomas crossed for a close range score which was converted by Mark Jones. Ponty regained their momentum as Jason Pocock launched a neat kick and chase attack, his team setting up camp in their opponents’ twenty-two. As a penalty try was awarded, Celyn Ashton slotted over the conversion to give Ponty a final scoreline advantage of 41 pts to 12. Pontypridd Squad:
