International Age Grade Rugby

With the busy coverage of the senior sides, let's not forget that our youngsters are playing international rugby too...  Last week Wales Under 16's and 18's both recorded fine wins...

YOUNG PLAYERS EARN FINE WIN

The Welsh Schools U16 (Intermediate) Group opened their season on Sunday with a tremendous win - 8 tries to 1 - over a year older Italy U17 side at Parabiago RFC near Milan writes Huw S Thomas.

ITALY U17 5 - 48 WELSH SCHOOLS U16
The Welsh side, captained by Gowerton CS and Ospreys fly-half Daniel Biggar who was capped by the Intermediate Group a year young last year, played exciting and adventurous rugby to shred the Italian defence to ruins.

“We expect a lot from this group” said backs coach Nicky Lloyd “and if they continue in this vein, they will be force to be reckoned with.”

Strong, organised and aggressive in both the tight and the contact area where hooker Rhys Williams (Aberdare Boys School) was outstanding, Wales had the Italians under the cosh throughout. It was significant, too, that all the Welsh tries came from their adventurous backs, Dwr Y Felin centre Ashley Beck leading the way with a hat trick of tries through strong running and sharp alertness.

Beck was one of seven Ospreys in action and wing Chris Lewis (Cefn Saeson CS), Biggar and centre Kristian Phillips (Ystalyfera) also flew the Ospreys flag in scoring very smart tries. Blues South wing Joe Xiberras (St Illtyd’s CS) and Blues North scrum half Rhys Downes (Rhydfelen) also crossed in a vibrant and confident display by the Schools side.

Biggar, a major influence throughout, kicked four conversions in one of the biggest away wins in the 102-year history of the Welsh Schools Intermediate Group.

UNDER 18'S OVERCOME ITALY CHALLENGE

New Wales U18 coach coach Rowland Phillips saw his side start off their 2005-2006 campaign with an excellent win over their Italian counterparts at the Stadio Natale, Colleferro on Sunday.
ITALY 13 - 18 WALES
“It is very encouraging to see the boys rise to the challenge of beating a very difficult side away from home and bodes well for the season ahead.” said the former Wales international flanker and current Neath coach who took over the U18 reins just a few months ago.

The game was the first of two warm up internationals – the other against France at the end of March – before the climax of the season, the Four Home Nations Tournament in Gloucestershire in mid-April. The Welsh starting line-up of five Scarlets, four Blues, three Dragons, and three Ospreys had to withstand a lot of heavy pressure in the opening half but well organised defence and committed tackling kept the Italians to a lone try by hooker Marco Moscado (San Dona)

Penalties by Brynmawr CS fly half David Langdon and Amman Valley CS full back Dan Evans had Wales narrowly ahead 6-5 at the break but it was a very much different Wales in the second half.

Although Italy took the lead with a penalty from fly-half Ricardo Bocchino (Capitalino), replacement half backs Gareth Williams (Colston’s) and Phil Williams (Whitchurch HS) revelled in the increasingly good possession from the line out where locks Haydn Pugh (Coleg Sir Gar) and Jevon Groves (Y Pant CS) were dominant.

With the Welsh loose play matching their effort in the tight, the Coleg Sir Gar pair of bustling centre Rhys Williams and ever present flanker Nicholas Cudd finished off some fine approach work to put Wales 18-8 up.

Wales were now in firm control and the very late Italian try from centre Dan Molinaro (Benevento) took nothing away from a very good Welsh performance.
